JOEYS Transition to Reception Program

We have created a transition program, JOEYS, to provide preschool aged children an extended transition period to starting Reception.

Rationale

When children and families participate in this program they:

  • develop their sense of belonging to the St Joseph’s School, Kingswood community
  • have the opportunity to establish a positive connection to the physical space
  • familiarise with the process of separating from family
  • access a rich, play-based learning program
  • develop social connections with new friends and educators
  • become familiar with the routines of school life i.e. morning meetings, snack time etc.

Learning

Children’s critical and creative thinking is supported through a meaningful play and child-centred program.

An active approach to acknowledging children’s contributions and theories informs our planning for both intentional and spontaneous learning experiences.

Partnerships

Family members and educators have the opportunity to discuss, share and celebrate the children’s learning experiences at each session time.

Children's learning is captured and shared with parents/caregivers via Seesaw app, which then continues throughout their school life at St Joseph's School, Kingswood.

Details

Children are invited to attend one session each Wednesday morning 9am – 11.30am in the two terms prior to commencing Reception at St Joseph's School, Kingswood.  (Families are also able to continue as a Playgroup member.)

Sessions are $15 a week.

Our JOEYS Transition to Reception program is offered to children during the two terms prior to them commencing at St Joseph's School, Kingswood.

While not compulsory, it is a valuable opportunity for children to form connections with friends, teachers and the physical school space before commencing formal schooling.

For children commencing mid-year, JOEYS begins in Week 5 of Term 1 and runs through until Week 9 of Term 2.

Children beginning school at the start of the year can attend JOEYS from Week 2 of Term 3 through until Week 7 of Term 4.

We host a very special JOEYS Liturgy Graduation at the end of each cycle- parents and caregivers are invited in to share with their children for this morning.
